Believe it or not, when we get lots of motion through space (like on a swing, dancing, or spinning) it actually helps our senses work better. With some well-timed rocking or spinning, stimulation, your little dude could be settling down with his dinosaurs for some sustained play time.

Randy met with me early childhood education on, and frankly I told him that what he was planning was impossible. Bloomington is a music town, you know? I worked at the Brown County Playhouse a little, but I never had any luck even borrowing a gel from Indiana University. I gave up asking, even though I was a faculty wife. My experience did not lead me to expect cooperation or assistance from IU. And I thought, you know, this is a university town and it's a huge music town. The music school is in the top three in the country, if not the best. I think it's even rated higher than Juilliard.

The main problem with teaching reading to students is that the good students are going to learn anyway, no matter what system is used. Also it depends on the parents. If the parents take an active role in their children's education and just simply read as often as possible then the children will have a head start.

The mommy playgroups is based on the belief that children learn through play with other children. The grouping of children is also unique. The children are not put into classes with only children their age; they are put into classes with children of varying ages. Varying the ages in this way helps the younger children learn skills from the older children. They also learn to work together as teams. The type of play the montessori education uses is not typical play, but very structured play. The teachers are really more of observers. They observe the children and step in as find playgroups in my area needed rather than writing the information on a blackboard in front of room of seated children.

A family is a group in which each member contributes according to one's abilities and age. In montessori this translates into giving each family member the tools and resources to do things for themselves, and not to be totally dependent on others. This independence and decision making when presented in a structured way can begin at a much earlier age than many believe.

We picked up a couple of packs and some flowered ones too--and boy, are they cute! She couldn't wait to shed her diaper. I wish I could say it was smooth sailing from then on, but it wasn't quite as easy as the first time around. Although she never went back to diapers, she had a few more accidents than her brother, probably because she was a full year younger. And I still have to remind her to go to the potty every now and then, if I think it's been a while.

My children attended playgroup kindergarten through elementary school, and as a family we found many of the principles so valuable that we implemented them at home. This is not intended to be an overview of the entire philosophy and curriculum of a Montessori school, rather things we found that were of great value to our family, and could be followed by any family.

Again, do not correct the child if he makes a mistake. Simply move back to the first and second periods of the lesson, or clean up and try again another day. The third period can be the most difficult to master.

The school of natural sciences maintained a nature trail. Our professor assigned us to take pen and notebook in hand and walk this nature trail, jotting down observations. She encouraged us to use all our senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. We could take as long as we liked in the woods. We could sit on a bench or wander around. When we returned to the classroom we sifted our raw material, our impressions into a finished piece.
